"Kaplan SelfTest has encountered an error and must close..."

For Vista Users:

1. If this is the first time you are installing one of our products (including the demo), please do the following after installing the product:

  • Set the program icon to ‘Run as Administrator’
  • Set the compatibility to ‘XP’

2. If you have a previous version of one of our products installed: We have found that for some reason on the Vista OS, the install process, especially if you have had a previous installation, creates a new Kaplan SelfTest folder and it gets confused during that process. I would start over with a fresh installation, follow these steps:

  • Uninstall the product completely using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
  • Delete both of the Kaplan SelfTest folders (in Program Files), then reboot the machine (this is essential!).
  • Redownload new install files and use those ONLY for the reinstall process. Install the test engine and then the test file.
  • Set the program icon to ‘Run as Administrator’
  • Set the compatibility to ‘Windows XP’

If the above does not work, run the application and try to activate again…but before you click the start button, send a screen shot of running processes and send a screen shot after you click OK the active test but before you hit the close program…This way we can see what is running at time of error.

For All Users:

The most common cause of this problem is an older DLL named msvbvm60.dll which needs to be updated. This file will cause several different types of malfunction within the test, but the most frequent is that the test engine will display an error message directly after the test is started off of the “My Exams” screen. The message will read; “… has encountered a problem and needs to close …”
To check the version of this DLL, use Start / Search for “msvbvm60.dll” and check the version to ensure it is not version 6.0.88.77, or look in the event log for the following error:

Faulting application testprep.exe, version 2.1.0.22, faulting module msvbvm60.dll, version 6.0.88.77, fault address 0x000141ec.

Other solutions for the above error depending on when the error occurs:

Starting a test...
Grading or checking history...
Selecting Certification Mode...
Trying to print a question...
